On Message: Using Strategic Communications to Advance Social Change in Black and Latino Communities

In cities and towns across the country, relationships between Blacks and Latinos have been fraught with fear, suspicion, and racism—but also nurtured by camaraderie, shared experiences, and mutual struggles. While the media, talk radio, and political commentators often take the opportunity to highlight and expose the divisions between Blacks and Latinos in the United States, they seldom give ample air time and ink to our mutual interests, projects, and joint efforts. This publication highlights the efforts involving Black- and Latino-serving nonprofit organizations that utilize strategic communications in their work, outlining common challenges and showcasing promising practices.

Grassroots groups speak up for Net Neutrality

Earlier this week, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approved a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Network Neutrality policies that would preserve the open Internet on all wired and wireless networks. While the battle is far from over, this was a positive step forward for grassroots groups, who partnered with the Media and Democracy Coalition to collect signatures in support of network neutrality from 40 grassroots groups from across the country, who represent communities of color, low-income communities, and other historically marginalized communities.

Through media we learn how to govern, what kinds of economic systems work or don’t, and to define the limits of what’s possible. We must fight for our media, as well as use it strategically to transform the worldview that supports structural racism, an undemocratic democracy, corporate control and global inequity, and the devolution of cities and public institutions."
